Q. What is the Subdivision and Servicing Bylaw (SDS Bylaw)?
A. The SDS Bylaw regulates the subdivision and development of land in the City, including the administrative and technical standards for initiating and completing developments within City limits

Q. Why does the SDS Bylaw need to be updated?
A. The SDS Bylaw was originally adopted by City Council in 1998. Since that time, we have updated the Official Community Plan, Active Transportation Master Plan, and Asset Management Policy resulting in changes to infrastructure development in our City. In addition, the SDS Bylaw will implement improvements for the City’s development processes and incorporate industry best practices in municipal infrastructure development in B.C.

Q. Why is the City aligning with the Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD)?
A. The Master Municipal Construction Document is an industry best practice guide in British Columbia for municipal infrastructure projects. It is widely used in municipalities and by adopting the MMCD, the City will remain up to date on the latest changes to industry standards.

Q. Who uses the SDS Bylaw?
A. The SDS Bylaw is generally used by developers who are proposing and building new infrastructure projects.

Q. As a resident, how will the SDS Bylaw Update affect me?
A. The updated SDS Bylaw will ensure new developments within the City of Fernie are consistent with the Official Community Plan and Active Transportation Master Plan.
