2025-2027 Resort Development Strategy (RDS)

The City’s draft Resort Development Strategy for 2025-2027 is now available for review.

Tourism is a major economic driver in Fernie. As a result, the City qualifies for funding through the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI). Part of the requirements to receive RMI funding is to develop a Resort Development Strategy to guide funding allocation.

This draft strategy was developed with Tourism Fernie and community partners and stakeholders through seven meetings with the RDS Advisory Working Group.

The RDS Advisory Working Group was comprised of representatives from:

  • City of Fernie
  • Tourism Fernie
  • Fernie & District Arts Council
  • Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation
  • Fernie Chamber of Commerce
  • Fernie Heritage Society
  • Fernie Trails Alliance
  • Elk River Alliance
  • Community Member at Large

Recommended projects in the 2025-2027 RDS

Priority Infrastructure and Capital Projects:

  • Station square enhancements
  • Signage, interpretive, and wayfinding project
  • Trail development, remediation, and impact management
  • Gathering and staging hub enhancements
  • Animation infrastructure
  • Winter visitor shuttle

Programs and Service:

  • Winter grooming collaborative
  • Core events and event applications

What’s Next?

The proposed RDS is being reviewed by the Province. Once the recommended strategy receives approval, the City will receive the approximately $2million in RMI funding to begin advancing the projects, events and animation highlighted in the strategy. The City will continue to meet annually with the Advisory Working Group to check in on project status and identify any emerging challenges or opportunities. Individual projects will undergo additional community engagement and consultation where required to improve delivery and outcomes of these community-driven tourism projects.
