2026 Draft Budget Receives Initial Readings

Council gave initial readings to the 2026–2030 Financial Plan Bylaw at the March 17 meeting. The bylaw is scheduled for third reading on March 24.

At the March 10 Meeting, Council directed Staff to prepare a draft budget to include a 6.68% property tax increase. The increase will cover an operating shortfall of approximately $728,000. The initial shortfall presented on February 20, was roughly $413,909, which would have required a 4.03% tax increase. Following the operating and capital budget presentations, Council directed staff to include an additional $315,000 to support community partners and initiatives, enhance resources in key departmental areas, and increase contributions to reserves. These additions bring the total proposed tax increase to 6.68%.

For the average home in Fernie, assessed at $990,108 the 6.68% increase equates to an additional $205.24 for the City portion of your tax bill.
